Frequently Asked Questions

Does my child need to be studying the language or have a certain level of ability?

No, camps are open to children at all levels, from complete beginners to advanced speakers. We assess each child’s language level on the first day of camp in a fun and ‘test-free’ way and place them in the appropriate group. Whether your child is just starting to learn or already has some experience, our teachers ensure that lessons are fun, interactive, and adapted to their level.

Are there tests or exams?

Nope! Rien! Nada! Zero tests. We believe the best learning happens when you're relaxed, curious, and having fun. At Athena Language Camp partner schools, it’s all about real-world conversation, cultural adventures, and confidence-building, not test scores—we’re all about stress-free, joyful learning. Our teachers use interactive games and activities to assess how well your child is developing their speaking and comprehension skills, and your teen will receive a detailed end of camp report that shows them how much they have improved over the week, and how proud they should be of their progress.

What safety measures are in place?

Your child's safety at our camps is our number one priority.

A dedicated Group Leader from the UK is allocated to every 10 teens —someone who travels with them and who’s there to support, guide, and look out for our teens every step of the way. They are responsible for the teens overnight and liaise with the language school if required. You will also be able to contact them directly if you need to. Each of our Group Leaders are PVG registered and have a background of working with teens (we have teachers, Girl Guide Leaders and ex police officers on our team).

The teachers and excursion leaders at the schools are experienced and follow strict safety protocols. We maintain small groups with plenty of supervision - each excursion is led by qualified guides who specialize in youth activities. All local school staff members are first-aid certified and know the area well, ensuring your child can safely enjoy their adventure.

What does the price include?

The Athena Language Camp experience includes 7 nights’ accommodation in university style 2-bed bedrooms, all meals (with the exception of one evening meal), 15 hours of language classes, afternoon excursions and cultural trips, including one full day excursion.

What doesn’t the price include?

One evening meal in the week where we will explore the local restaurants, and order the specialities from the region (and ask for the bill!). Students are also likely to want to use the nearby cafes and shops, so some spending money is recommended.
While the majority of extra activities are included, some may have an additional cost (but these activities are not mandatory) e.g. an afternoon learning to cook a traditional Basque menu at a prestigious cooking school in Donastia-San Sebastián.
Flights and airport transfers are priced separately and in addition to the week. However, these are payable through the Athena process, keeping things simple for you!

What is a Buddy Bonus?

Friends + fun + savings = the perfect combo. Book with a friend or sibling and unlock your discount.

What if my child doesn’t know anyone else going?

Not a problem at all! Many of our students come on their own – it’s part of the adventure. We carefully pair rooms by same sex, similar age, and shared interests where possible, so your child won’t feel out of place. Before camp, we arrange a chance to meet fellow students online, so they’ll already recognise some friendly faces.

In fact, some students choose to come solo because they’re using the experience as part of their Duke of Edinburgh Gold Award Residential. And of course, the whole spirit of Athena is about making new friends – your child might arrive without knowing anyone, but they’ll almost certainly return with friendships that last well beyond the camp.

Can you provide additional support, if required?

At Athena, we know children can have different needs and we believe making our camps accessible makes the experience better for everyone. Every child is unique, so if additional support is required, we ask parents to get in touch with us directly so we can work together with our partner school to put the right support in place and help your child feel included and happy at camp.

Tell me about the travel logistics!

Athena Language Camps are delighted to have partnered with Karen Rodger from Travel Councillors. While the payment for the flights will be done seamlessly through Athena, it means that you have the reassurance that if anything does go wrong such as cancelled flights, all flight bookings are protected. We have 24/7 support, ensuring assistance is always available. It also means that we get the best deals possible on group travel!

Can we pick up our child at the end of camp and have a holiday together?

Absolutely! Many families choose to meet their child at the end of the week and turn it into a holiday. It’s a wonderful chance for your child to show you around the city and local area they’ve come to know so well – and even impress you by ordering meals in the local language! We’ll make sure pick-up arrangements are smooth and simple, so you can start your family adventure straight away. Just let us know as soon as you can if this is your plan so that we can work with our travel provider.
